Transportation in British Columbia: A Student’s Guide

Starting your journey at Orane International College in British Columbia is exciting — but understanding how to move around safely, affordably, and easily is just as important as choosing the right course. Whether you’re heading to class, exploring the city, or going on a weekend adventure, knowing your transport options will help you save time, money, and stress.

Both our Surrey campuses are well connected by public transit, biking trails, and road networks, and the following information will make you more aware of these.

Public Transit

British Columbia’s public transport system is one of the most reliable and student-friendly in Canada.

What does it offer?

  • Buses: Covering every major route across Metro Vancouver.
  • SkyTrain: A fast and driverless train system connecting Vancouver, Surrey, Coquitlam, and Richmond.
  • SeaBus: It is an excellent option for transport since it is a passenger ferry connecting downtown Vancouver to North Vancouver in BC.

📍Closest Transit to Our Campuses

  • Surrey Campus: Well-connected through Surrey Central SkyTrain Station and nearby bus lines.
  • Compass Card – Your Key to Public Transit
  • A rechargeable smart card used for buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express.
  • Buy one from stations or retailers and reload online or at kiosks.
  • Fare starts at CAD $3, with monthly prepaid passes from CAD $102.
  • As a student, you might qualify for discounted travel under the U-Pass BC Program.

U-Pass BC (For Eligible Students)

  • Offers unlimited access to public transit in Metro Vancouver at a reduced cost.

Cycling – An Eco-Friendly & Healthy Option

British Columbia is incredibly bike-friendly, especially in Surrey, and Vancouver.

  • Bike Lanes: Safe and dedicated paths for cyclists.
  • Bike Parking: Available at both campuses.
  • Weather: Mild most of the year – perfect for riding.
  • Pro Tip: Use bike-share apps like Mobi in Vancouver.

Driving & Parking

Driving in BC is smooth and scenic.

  • Parking: Parking is available at our campus, subject to spot availability.
  • Electric Vehicles Welcome: Many areas have charging stations.
  • Carpooling: Save on fuel and make friends! Try apps like Poparide for intercity rides.

Note: International students can drive in BC using their home country’s licence for up to 90 days, and afterwards, you’ll need to apply for a BC driver’s licence. Requirements may vary based on the country’s licensing agreements with Canada, and some may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home country’s license. Always check with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) for specific details or exceptions.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing

Need a ride in a hurry?

  • Use apps like Uber or Lyft, but they are more expensive compared to buses or trains.
  • Taxis are also available, but ride-share apps may be cheaper and faster.
  • Ideal for late-night rides or when public transport is unavailable.

Air Travel

Planning to explore more of Canada or head home during breaks?

  • Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is only 30–45 minutes from Orane International Canada Campus when using the transportation modes of SkyTrain or car.
  • Other airports in BC include Abbotsford International Airport and Victoria International Airport,  and they both offer domestic and international flights.

Weekend Travel & Exploration

Use transportation options like:

  • Greyhound or Rider Express for intercity bus travel.
  • BC Ferries to visit Vancouver Island, Victoria, or the Gulf Islands.
  • Car rentals (with valid IDP/driver’s license) for road trips to Whistler, Kelowna, or the Rockies.
